Smorodintsev Research Institute of Influenza was founded in 1967, as the main national scientific institution responsible for research in the field of respiratory infections. The founder and first Director of the Institute (1967-1972) was the internationally well-known scientist Anatoly Smorodintsev, academician of the Soviet Academy of Sciences.
Today, Smorodintsev Research Institute of Influenza is the leading institution in Russia and is involved in different aspects of research and development of new vaccines, diagnostics and novel antiviral drugs.
Both the Federal Centre for Influenza and Acute Respiratory Infections and World Health Organization National Influenza Center are hosted at the Institute. These centers are integrated in the Global Influenza Surveillance and Response System (GISRS).
Smorodintsev Research Institute of Influenza maintains a large collection of viruses and cell cultures and is a recognized partner of the European Virus Archive (EVA) — one of the largest online virus repositories in the world.
